Sha’Quatrell Harper’s death has left his family and community struggling with heartbreak and loss.
The body of 14-year-old Sha’Quatrell Harper was recovered from Lake Kesslerwood on the morning of July 7, 2026, bringing a heartbreaking end to an intensive search effort.
Nicknamed “Quada” by those who loved him, Sha’Quatrell disappeared beneath the lake’s surface Sunday evening after jumping into the water from a pontoon boat and never resurfacing.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the 5800 block of Fall Creek Parkway North just before 6:28 p.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a missing swimmer.
Friends who were with Sha’Quatrell tried to him in the water immediately after he went under but were unable to find him.
Search and rescue efforts quickly escalated. Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Fishers Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) worked throughout the night using boats, sonar technology, divers, and a remotely operated vehicle.
Despite their exhaustive efforts, it wasn’t until 10:20 a.m. the following morning that DNR officials located and recovered his body using sonar equipment.
Indiana Conservation Officer David Moss emphasized the dangers of open-water swimming, stating,
“Take water seriously would be my advice. It can be fun and refreshing, but any time you get in the water, there can be a danger.”

Sha’Quatrell Harper’s untimely death has devastated his family, friends, and community.
Known for his kind heart, love of basketball, and sharp mind, Quada brought joy and laughter to those around him.
His relatives described him as a “sweet, caring, beautiful soul” who always stayed on the right path.
His aunt, Natasha Hill, shared the pain of watching his body being pulled from the water:
“I still don’t believe it’s real even when I seen them pull his body out that river. Seeing him like that hurt my soul.”
Quada’s story is one of promise and potential tragically cut short.
His death not only leaves a deep void in the lives of his loved ones but also serves as a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be, especially around water.
Though he wasn’t an organ donor, his story has sparked conversations around organ donation, a powerful way to offer hope in the wake of loss.
His family hopes that Quada’s memory will inspire others to consider the impact they can make in times of tragedy.
As the community mourns, efforts are underway to give him a farewell that honors the bright and compassionate young man he was.
“Help the family send this baby off in the best way we can,” Hill . “He deserves it.”
