The Bedford community is reeling from a heartbreaking tragedy after 17-year-old Gwendolyn Fay Smith, a gifted and beloved 2026 graduate of Bedford High School, was found dead on Saturday, June 14.

Smith was discovered alongside 33-year-old Ryne Jacob Leist in a home on the 1600 block of West Sterns Road in Bedford Township.

Both were residents of Temperance, Michigan.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, and autopsy results are pending from the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities have not released further details but assured the public that there is no threat to the community.

The sheriff’s office stated on June 16,

“We ask for the community’s patience as this investigation continues.”

Gwendolyn Smith Was A Bright Light In Bedford

Superintendent Carl Shultz delivered the somber news to Bedford Public Schools in a letter dated June 15, describing Gwen as a rare and vibrant soul.

Shultz wrote,

“Gwen was an extraordinary young woman whose presence left an indelible mark on our school community. She was a gifted student who excelled academically, a passionate artist in our music programs, and a standout athlete on our bowling team.”

Her loss has sent shockwaves through her school and the greater Bedford area.

She is survived by her mother, Laura Kennerson; her stepfather, Matt Kennerson; her grandparents; and other family members.

A GoFundMe campaign created by Superintendent Shultz to support Gwen’s grieving family has already raised over $14,000 toward its $18,000 goal.

The page reads,

“This tragic and unnecessary loss cannot be explained. Our hearts and prayers go out to Gwen’s family and the many friends whose lives she touched so deeply.”

Those in urgent need of emotional assistance are encouraged to call the Michigan Crisis and Access Line by dialing 988.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to piece together what led to this tragic incident.

While no official cause of death has yet been released, detectives remain committed to providing answers.

Rest in peace, Gwen. You will never be forgotten.
