Darius Coon, a 31-year-old native Detroiter, passed away on July 19, 2026, in Miami. He was in a sports utility vehicle on the 10th floor of a garage shared by condominium residents and hotel guests at 230 NE 4th St. in Downtown.
He moved from Detroit to Miami a few months ago and was reported missing on July 16.
Miami police are investigating a brutal double homicide after two victims, Darius Coon and Chastidy Rodriguez, were found shot to death inside a car at a high-rise parking garage.
The shocking discovery has left detectives scrambling for answers as they piece together the final moments of the victims’ lives.
Darius was reported missing on July 16, the same night he and Chastidy were believed to have been on a date.
Chastidy Rodriguez had only been in Miami for a week and was working briefly at a local strip club. Relatives confirmed she had recently met the football coach in South Florida.
They suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and investigators are treating the case as a homicide but have not yet identified a suspect or motive.
Surveillance footage from the parking garage is being reviewed, and detectives are urging anyone who was in the area between July 16 and 19 to come forward with information.
We received a call from someone telling us that they’re sensing a foul odor. We now have three to four days of surveillance video to go through – hour by hour.
Our detectives are working the case. They’re trying to obtain surveillance from several locations around the area and piece together what exactly happened.
Darius Coon’s Family Mourns The Tragic Loss
Darius Coon was a beloved son, devoted father, cherished coach, and kind-hearted soul who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 31.
He touched the lives of many with his warmth, dedication to family, and unwavering love for his children.
Darius remained deeply connected to his roots, despite having recently moved to Miami.
He frequently returned home to spend time with his loved ones, especially his two children, who meant the world to him. He drove a 2026 White Jeep Cherokee with license plate MI #EWF69791.
Just last week, he made the drive back to Florida after a visit, but when his daily calls to his family suddenly stopped, those who knew him best sensed something was wrong.
The Coon are heartbroken with the tragic news.
I talked to my son three, four times a day. When he didn’t call, I knew something was wrong.
To lose a child, it’s nothing I would wish on anyone. Why? Why someone want to take my son’s life, and he was a good person?
The family’s fears were tragically confirmed, leaving them shattered by the loss of a man whose presence brought joy and love to so many.
Darius’ absence leaves an immeasurable void, particularly for his young children. His 7-year-old daughter doesn’t understand anything, but she knows that Daddy’s not picking up the phone.
Similarly, his son, a rising football player, struggled to face practice without his biggest supporter, and Darius was always there for him.
Darius will be laid to rest in his hometown of Detroit on August 7, a poignant day that would have been his 32nd birthday.
Though his time on earth was far too short, the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
The Coon family will share details regarding memorial services at a later time.
