Coach André Jones is the (and often coach) at Charles City County High School in Virginia.

Coach André Jones has confirmed through a that he has not renewed his contract as the school’s Athletic Director.

He stated that part of his decision was prompted by the school board’s recent move not to bring him back as the head indoor and outdoor track and field coach.

While some initially believed this may be speculation, Jones himself made the announcement public.

He clarified that it’s not a rumor but a decision made by the board.

Expressing his disappointment, he said the board cited a policy change that prevents athletic directors from coaching.

In his message, Jones shared how stunned and confused he was by the decision, especially given his long-standing commitment and success.

He emphasized that he received no opportunity to defend himself and questioned why he could still serve as AD but not as coach, saying:

But what bothers me is that I have the capability to serve as the athletic director but not as the head track and field coach? Don’t I deserve the right to have an explanation after holding such a position for 18 years? Don’t I deserve the right to defend myself?

Citing other schools in the region where ADs and even principals coach sports, Jones argued that his situation contradicts common practice.

Despite being offered to stay on as Athletic Director, he felt disrespected that his coaching contributions were disregarded, saying:

I feel unappreciated for the time and hours I put in. I was at roughly 98 percent of every home game. Football, basketball (even those away basketball games), volleyball, track, Scholastic Bowl, baseball, and softball, I was there. Taking tickets, keeping the scorebook, things that technically aren’t my responsibility, but yet I did those things so that the programs could continue and function properly. Online updates and website managing? That was me as well. And I started those social media pages long before I became an Athletic Director. And yes, I still was successful as a coach…

He expressed that the lack of explanation and transparency made the decision even harder to accept.

Beyond coaching, Jones outlined the personal sacrifices and commitment he made to support the school’s entire athletic program.

He highlighted how fundraisers he led for track and field helped cover expenses for other sports.

He said his AD salary remained low for years compared to what similar roles typically pay, but he stayed because of his love for the students and the community.

Feeling undervalued and targeted, Jones said it’s time to stand on his principles and step away, saying:

I guess I feel that I have been personally targeted because I did my job as both an athletic director and coach the right way. I feel insulted, I really do.

At last, he thanked his student-athletes, fellow coaches, and the community for their support.
