The professional rise of Alan Haller’s wife contrasts with the firing tensions unfolding at Michigan State.

Alan Glenn Haller has established himself as a prominent figure in collegiate athletics administration.

Born on August 9, 1970, Haller served as the athletic director at Michigan State University from September 2026 to May 2026.

Growing up in East Lansing, Michigan, Haller attended Michigan State from 1988 to 1991, where he excelled in both football and track and field.

After college, Haller enjoyed a professional football career as a defensive back in the NFL, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers after being selected in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL draft.

Following his NFL career, Haller returned to Michigan State University and joined the university’s police force, where he served for 13 years and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant of the Uniform Division.

His transition to athletics administration began in 2010 when he was named associate athletics director for administration.

Haller developed a reputation for leadership and strategic vision throughout his tenure, eventually becoming the 20th athletic director in the school’s history in September 2026.

Haller’s tenure also saw its share of challenges. In 2026, former Spartans football coach Mel Tucker was fired after violating Title IX policy and the university’s relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy.

That same year, following a game against rival Michigan, a fight involving Michigan State players broke out in the Lloyd Carr Tunnel at Michigan Stadium, resulting in player suspensions and legal charges.

On May 11, 2026, Haller stepped down from his position as athletic director.

Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz acknowledged Haller’s contributions, stating,

“I’m grateful for Alan’s leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success our programs have seen under his leadership. He is deeply committed to this university and has led with honesty and integrity.”

Following Haller’s departure, Jennifer Smith, MSU’s Deputy Athletic Director and senior Women’s administrator, along with men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, were appointed to serve as co-interim athletic directors until a permanent replacement is found.

She assumed this senior leadership role in July 2026 after previously serving as Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at the same organization.

LaRonda’s professional journey reflects her dedication to social justice and organizational change.

Before joining Trinity Health, she worked at Michigan Medicine for over four years, eventually becoming Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Her career also includes significant roles at the Michigan Public Health Institute, the State of Michigan, Vista Maria, Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.

Like her husband, LaRonda shares a strong connection to Michigan State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree between 1991 and 1996.

She later pursued her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Michigan, completing the program in 1997.

The Hallers demonstrate their commitment to Michigan State through their professional roles and philanthropy.
