Tamir Johnson, a former standout basketball player at Kutztown University, was fatally shot in a road rage incident in downtown Allentown on July 6, 2026.
The fatal shooting of a basketball player, Tamir Johnson, occurred early on July 6, 2026, in downtown Allentown during a road rage incident.
Johnson, 38, was driving an Audi westbound on West Hamilton Street when he reportedly forced a Prius to the curb and confronted the driver with a metal baseball bat.
Surveillance footage shows Johnson striking the driver’s side door of the Prius with a metal baseball bat.
Moments later, the driver, legally licensed to carry a firearm, fired a single shot that struck Johnson in the torso.

After the shooting, the Prius driver drove a short distance, pulled over, and called 911. Police later recovered a 9mm handgun from him.
Johnson was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, where he was
Authorities have not released the shooter’s identity, and no criminal charges have been filed.
As evidence suggests, Johnson was the aggressor in the altercation, and the Prius driver acted in self-defense.
Tamir Johnson Had A Standout Career At Kutztown University!
Born on January 01, 1987, was a well-loved basketball player and a respected member of the Kutztown University community.
Standing 6’6″, he played for Kutztown and was known for his strong work ethic, quiet leadership, and warm personality.
On the court, Tamir was a powerful forward who led his team in scoring and rebounding during his senior season.
A transfer from Central Connecticut State, he played from 2009 to 2011 and quickly became one of the team’s most dependable forwards.
He led the PSAC in field goal percentage both seasons (62.4%) and consistently ranked among the top rebounders.
Johnson recorded 21 career double-doubles, scored in double figures 36 times, and hit multiple game-winning shots, including dramatic finishes against East Stroudsburg and Cheyney.
In his senior season, Johnson averaged 15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, finishing in the top 10 in both categories across the conference.
His standout performances included a career-high 30 points and 16 rebounds against Mansfield, as well as a personal-best 18 rebounds against Goldey-Beacom.
Moreover, he was honored with multiple accolades, including All-PSAC East First Team, PSAC East Player of the Week (twice), and induction into the Lehigh Valley Small College Coaches’ Association Unsung Hero Team.

Johnson’s sudden passing sent shockwaves through not only his family but also the wider Kutztown University and Allentown communities.
Friends, teammates, and former coaches have spoken of Tamir as a role model and a humble leader.
On social media, Johnson’s relatives shared heartfelt messages mourning his loss. One of his cousins wrote,

I’m so sorry! Since my bd shot at me u made sure to keep checking on me & the baby!
we are not ready for this one Tamir.. you will truly be missed. my condolences to you cousin I love you

Kutztown University also extended sympathy to his family, describing Tamir as a tremendous leader, a quality individual, and an outstanding student-athlete.
Moreover, , Tamir’s mother, shared that she was in deep disbelief following her son’s passing, saying:
As I sit here on Tamir’s deck I can’t see nothing right now I’m n disbelief right now.
Likewise, one of Tamir Johnson’s friends paid tribute to him, saying:
So sad to hear of the passing of our brother, Tamir Johnson. Tamir was one of our first Division I signees. Graduated from Kutztown. And was a committed father and family man. May God be with his family, especially his children.
Though Tamir Johnson’s life was tragically cut short, his legacy remains powerful and enduring.
