Dominican baseball second baseman Ketel Marte’s wife, Elisa Guerrero, is the cousin of famous baseball player Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Ketel Marte went 2-for-4 with a in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.
He opened up the scoring with a solo blast to right-center in the first inning.
Marte has homered three times over the last five games and has 15 hits in his previous 26 at-bats.
He currently owns a 1.032 OPS, which would sit third in all of baseball among qualified hitters behind Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh.
During the match, Ketel on the field after a fan yelled derogatory comments about his mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017.
Manager Torey Lovullo put his arm around Marte near the mound during a pitching change in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Marte wiped tears from his eyes repeatedly during the half-inning. The incident angered teammates, including shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, who went on an expletive-laden rant in which he called for MLB to do more to police the behavior of fans.
Ketel declined to comment through a team spokesman following Arizona’s win.
