Boston Athletic Association Member And Coach Robert Champney, 86, Passes Away Leaving Wife Barbara And Two Children

Robert Champney, a member of the Boston Athletic Association and the Hopkinton Marathon Committee, tragically passed away on Saturday.

Robert spent decades as a teacher, coach, and school administrator, mentoring countless students and athletes.

He football, hockey, baseball, and track.

Champney was also involved in his beloved town of Hopkinton, where he lived for 50 years.

He served on the School Committee and chaired the town’s 27th anniversary celebration.

Robert chaired and proudly fired the starting pistol for the fourth wave of the Boston Marathon in 2019. A loyal Boston College fan, he held season tickets to BC football games for over 50 years.

A proud veteran, Robert also served his country with honor in the United States Army as a cryptanalyst stationed at Tori Station, Okinawa.

Robert Louis Patrick Champney Passed Away At The Age Of 86

Robert Louis Patrick Champney took his last breath on Saturday, May 17, 2026, at 86. However, the cause of death has not been revealed.

Close ones and relatives have offered their heartfelt condolences and prayers to Robert’s family to stay strong in this heartbreaking moment.

Per Robert’s family, at Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, 57 Hayden Rowe St., on Wednesday, May 21, 2026, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

A brief memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., where family and friends will gather to honor Robert’s life and legacy.

Robert will always be remembered for his contributions as a coach and member of the Boston Athletics Association. Rest in Paradise, Robert Louis Patrick Champney.

Robert Champney Is Survived By His Wife, Barbara, And Two Children

Robert Champney married Barbara Champney, who helped him balance his personal and professional life. Their wedding date has not been revealed.

Barbara was born to her father, Robert J. Granahan, and her mother, Mary P. Granahan.

Her mother, Mary, was born in Boston and lived in Quincy most of her life.

She North Quincy High School and was a member of North Quincy Catholic Women’s Club, Sodality, and Arts and Crafts at Sacred Heart.

Sadly, Mary passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014. Relatives and friends were invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY.

A Celebration of Life Service was held in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, before the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy.

Barbara and Robert were blessed with two : Kara and Kevin Champney.

Kevin Champney married Laura, with whom he shares three children: Christian, Luke, and Mairead.

Although Kara and Kevin have avoided social media, they are currently mourning the tragic death of their supportive and devoted father, Robert Louis Patrick Champney.

• Robert volunteered on the Hopkinton Marathon Fund Committee and chaired the HMC during the 101st and 102nd Boston Marathons.
