This incident further ended their relationship at the time, but they reconnected several months later, sought counselling, and rebuilt their relationship.
The incident remained private until January 2026, when Danielle Reyna, mother of U.S. soccer player Gio Reyna, informed U.S. Soccer officials that she intended to expose the decades-old event after being upset about her son’s playing time.
This led the U.S. Soccer Federation to open an independent investigation. The inquiry confirmed the 1992 event as an isolated incident that Berhalter had already disclosed and addressed years ago.
It found no ongoing issues or legal barriers to his coaching role. The investigation also revealed that the Reyna family had pressured officials and threatened Berhalter during the World Cup period.
