Coach James Daniely Wilson, known affectionately as “Papa” to his family and “Coach” to the countless athletes he inspired, took his last breath on May 7, 2026, at 86 in Redding, California.
For 55 years, Coach Wilson dedicated himself to teaching physical education and coaching generations of athletes.
Coach Wilson is survived by his wife of 55 years, Penelope; his daughters Vanessa and her husband Joe; and Courtaney and her partner Erik.
The respected coach and his wife, Penelope, were married in 1969, and over the years, they raised two children, Vanessa and Courtaney.
A devoted father, Wilson shared his love for sports with his children. He taught Vanessa to run alongside him and coached Courtaney in the art of the perfect basketball shot.
Coach Wilson was a loving grandfather to his five grandchildren, Esteban, Nick, Ella, Benji, and Siena, to whom he was “Papa.”
He also leaves behind his sister Marilynne, her husband Gary, and countless student-athletes, colleagues, and friends.
Whereas, James Daniely Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Howie, his sister Sharon, and his brother Kent.
A celebration of Coach Wilson’s life is scheduled on Saturday, May 24, 2026, from 1–3 p.m. at the Red Bluff Community Center.
James Daniely Wilson Spent Over Five Decades of His Career In Coaching!
Coach Wilson was born on February 1, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, as the eldest of four children to his parents, Lois and William (Howard) Wilson.
Growing up in modest circumstances, he understood early on that it was hard work and determination which could lead him to a brighter future.
After his family relocated to Whittier, California, James earned a golf scholarship, which opened the doors for his higher education.
He earned an athletic scholarship and played Football at Utah State before transferring to California State University, Chico, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree.
Wilson later obtained a Master’s degree in Physical Education from La Verne University and was just six hours shy of completing a Ph.D., a goal he always hoped to achieve.
Coach Wilson was a great athlete; he played golf at a high level, winning many tournaments, including the Nevada State Senior Championship in 1990.
He was also amazing at basketball. Coach Wilson could make 100 free throws in a row while whistling and cheering for himself.
For a prolonged period of 55 years, Coach Wilson dedicated himself to teaching physical education and coaching.

Above all, his influence went beyond wins and losses. Coach Wilson taught his athletes the values of integrity and hard work.
It has been difficult to process the fact that he isn’t among us anymore. Though he is gone, his contributions will always remain immortal.
During this ordeal, we would also like to offer our heartfelt condolences to Coach Wilson’s wife, kids, friends, colleagues, and extended family.
