A D’Hanis Independent School District head football coach, Troy Langfield, passed away at 55. Superintendent Brian Thompson confirmed the untimely demise.
The coach’s family grieves in private and hasn’t disclosed the actual cause.
Troy had been with the Cowboys since 2006 and coached them in football for 19 seasons. While at the D’Hanis, he compiled an overall record of 132-76.
In addition to coaching football, he also taught business classes and coached baseball at the school.
He worked as an assistant coach under D’Hanis’ baseball coach, Todd Craft, to prepare their team for the 2026 semifinal state championship game.
Troy’s untimely demise saddened the whole D’Hanis Independent School District, and many remembered him in their heartfelt tribute.
The school district has expressed deep sorrow over his passing and is offering counseling support to students and staff during this difficult time.

The D’Hanis community mourns the loss of Troy Langfield, who died untimely at 55. He was a pillar of the school and a beloved figure to countless students, athletes, and colleagues.
He leaves a legacy of leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his teams and classrooms.
was the football coach at D’Hanis ISD for two decades. He inspired players to excel on the field and grow as individuals of character and resilience.
The football program thrived under his direction, thanks to his strategic mind, tireless work ethic, and deep care for his athletes.
Beyond football, he shared his passion for sports as a baseball coach, mentoring young players with the same enthusiasm and dedication.
Furthermore, Troy was a respected business teacher in the classroom. He shaped students’ futures with practical knowledge and a focus on integrity and hard work.
His ability to connect with students, whether on the field or in the classroom, made him a trusted mentor and role model.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Troy is a devoted family man. He married his wife on June 14, 1998, and has a daughter. and are his close family members.
Similarly, his countless former players, students, and friends who will forever cherish his impact survive him.
Our hearts are broken, and we are in complete shock to hear of his passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with him and anyone who knew him. He is already terribly missed.
I remember when I first met him and the D’Hanis bunch. They were my first coaching families and definitely the best. They treated me like family from the moment I met Scott. Both Craft and Langfeld treated Scott more like a brother than anything. Along with Coach Howard, this crew coached the best kids!!! I couldn’t have asked for a better group to start Scott’s coaching career with.
His absence leaves a profound void in the D’Hanis community, but his influence will endure through the lives he shaped.
The Langfeld family will soon announce the coach’s celebration of life. To honor his legacy, donations will be accepted instead of flowers.
