Dresden, Ontario, is mourning the loss of 12-year-old hockey player Decker Beatty, who was involved in a UTV accident on July 2, 2026, and passed away surrounded by his family on July 6, 2026.
His loss has created a deep emptiness for his family, friends, teammates, and everyone in the Chatham-Kent community.
Decker was not only a skilled athlete but also a kind person and a quiet leader. His enthusiasm inspired everyone around him.
Born on May 10, 2013, to his devoted parents, Jamie and Michelle Beatty, Decker grew up in Dresden alongside his sister, Berkeley, and brother, Blake.
From a young age, he radiated warmth and compassion, lighting up any room with his sandy blond hair, curious eyes, and ever-present smile.
Decker poured his heart into everything he did, whether he was on the ice, helping at home, or sharing moments with his family and friends.
His family described him as someone who “poured his absolute best into everything he did and admired the same dedication from others.”
Decker’s love for hockey defined much of his young life.
As a proud member of the Dresden Minor Hockey Association, he was a shining star on the ice, known for his fierce competitiveness, unwavering dedication, and infectious passion for the game.
His teammates and coaches cherished his quiet strength and humble approach, which inspired those around him to strive for excellence.
At the rink, his presence was magnetic—people would often say, “Where’s Decker?” or “Decker’s here!”—words that brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
Beyond hockey, Decker was a boy of boundless energy and an adventurous spirit.
Whether he was riding his bike through town, exploring nature, or cracking jokes at the dinner table, he made every moment unforgettable.
His grandparents, Jeff and Jackie Beatty and Cathy McFadden, along with his late grandfather, Tim McFadden, held a special place in his heart.
Decker also shared a deep bond with his cousins Avery, Lila, Henry, Willow, and Lars, and was adored by his aunts and uncles, Marianne, Rob, Annie, Nick, and Josh.
A Tragic Accident
, when a 2014 Kubota RTV500 overturned on a rural gravel road near Kouba Valley Road in the town of Greenwood, Vernon County, Wisconsin.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, the UTV, carrying Decker and an 11-year-old friend, lost control while curving to the right on a slightly declining road.
The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on private property.
Both children were rushed to Emplify Health Hospital by Gundersen Hillsboro Area, but despite the valiant efforts of first responders and medical staff, Decker succumbed to his injuries on July 6.
The second child was also injured but survived.
The incident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, and Vernon County Coroner’s Office.
The Beatty family expressed deep appreciation to those who fought tirelessly to save Decker, including Chatham-Kent EMS, volunteer firefighters from Dresden’s Chatham-Kent Fire Station 6, the Chatham-Kent Police Service (especially officers Kyle Merritt and Joel Rehill), ER staff at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Ornge Air Ambulance, Ronald McDonald House in London, and the Pediatric Critical Care Unit staff at London Health Sciences Centre, including nurses Paige, Lauren, Hannah, Ayasha, and social worker Kasey.
The family shared in his obituary.

The Wallaceburg Minor Hockey Association (WMHA), a rival team, shared a heartfelt message:
“Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the passing of Dresden’s own, Decker Beatty. As close hometown rivals on the ice, we share in the deep sadness that this unimaginable loss brings to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Dresden community. As parents, we can’t help but picture ourselves in this situation, and it is something no family should ever have to endure. Gone far too soon, his loss reminds us all to hold our children a little tighter tonight.”
ViaDecker’s grandmother, Jackie Beatty, shared a poignant tribute on Facebook:
Friends and community members flooded social media with tributes. Mary Holsker Hoyles wrote,
“My heart is broken for you all… Decker had Prime Minister written all over him.” Cris Liberty Sewell added, “In my eyes, Decker will always be my little superhero/farmer, Speedy Beatty! The day he came through my daycare doors, he instantly became family.”
ViaDecker had a strong impact on everyone who knew him.
Decker’s life, though brief, was filled with love, laughter, and purpose.
His family noted that his greatest joy was the togetherness of his loved ones, and he left behind a legacy of camaraderie among his countless friends and teammates.
His quiet confidence, boundless energy, and kind heart inspired those around him to live with courage and compassion.
at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre, 1212 North Street, Dresden, on Wednesday, July 9, 2026.
A walk-through will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 p.m. A private family interment will follow at Blackburn Cemetery in Dresden.
Friends are welcome to mingle after the celebration, although the family will not be returning.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations by cheque to the Dresden Minor Hockey Association (c/o P.O. Box 339, Dresden, ON N0P 1M0), Dresden Area Central School (Athletics), or Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwestern Ontario.
As the Dresden community gathers to honor his memory, they are reminded to hold their loved ones a little closer and to cherish every moment.
Decker’s light will continue to shine through the stories, laughter, and love he shares with those around him.
Although he is no longer here, his spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the hockey community, which will never forget him.
