A wave of heartbreak is rippling through Surry County, North Carolina, following the sudden and tragic death of Colby Cruise, a former Surry Central High School football standout.
The beloved 19-year-old, known for his compassion, work ethic, and bright smile, passed away after a reported accident, leaving behind a community stunned and grieving.
Colby Cruise Was A Star On And Off The Field
Colby was a talented athlete and a well-rounded, deeply grounded young man who touched the lives of countless people.
At Surry Central High School, he played Defensive End for the Boys’ Varsity Football Team, wearing jersey number 60.
Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, Colby was a force on the field, respected for his hustle, commitment, and team spirit.
But it wasn’t just his physical strength that made an impression.
It was the way he treated others, his drive for excellence, and the quiet leadership he carried into every locker room, classroom, and hallway.
Colby Cruise Was Aiming To Become A Physician Assistant In The Near Future
After graduating, Colby didn’t slow down.
He joined Campbell University in 2026, where he pursued a Kinesiology/Pre-Physician Assistant program, with the intention of becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) in the future.
In addition to his studies, he also worked as a Medical Assistant I at Northern Orthopaedics, beginning in January 2026.
Even while managing a heavy academic load, Colby was already out in the world, helping patients, gaining experience, and preparing for a healthcare career.
In his free time, he loved playing golf, spending time outdoors, and cherishing moments with family and friends.
Tributes Have Poured In For The Beloved Soul
Since news of his passing broke, friends, family, teachers, and mentors have poured their hearts out online, sharing just how deeply Colby impacted their lives.
One friend said,
“Breaks my heart, but we know where he’s at, in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We love and miss you Colby.”
