Robert Eugene Davis, a devoted educator, veteran, and cherished member of the Cumberland community, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, at the age of 95.

Born on May 11, 1930, in Mason City, Iowa, he lived a full and meaningful life defined by service, mentorship, and an enduring love for the outdoors.

Robert Eugene Davis, aka Bob, was the son of Glenn F. and Frieda (Grover) Davis.

After graduating from Cumberland High School in 1948, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed at Wold-Chamberlain Field in Minneapolis.

He also spent a year at sea aboard a Great Lakes One Carrier, working as a fireman.

His military service shaped his values of discipline and commitment, qualities he carried with him throughout his life.

He Was The Coach & Athletic Director For The Cumberland School District

In 1957, Robert graduated from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, and that same year, he began a lifelong commitment to education.

Returning to Cumberland, he taught eighth-grade science at the local middle school.

But he was far more than a science teacher; Bob was a coach, a mentor, and a role model.

Over the years, Bob served as a basketball coach, football coach, and later as the athletic director for the Cumberland School District, where he worked until his retirement in 1990.

Through these roles, he impacted generations of students, many of whom remember him not only for his classroom lessons but also for the life lessons he instilled.

As one former student shared,

“Of all the teachers I had, he was the most influential in my young life. He made me love the sciences.”

Another remembered him simply as,

“A great teacher and coach. Always positive!”

These heartfelt tributes echo the profound impact Bob had on his students and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

He Was A Devoted Husband, Father, And Grandfather

Robert Eugene Davis married Judy Nesvold in 1958, and together they built a loving home until her passing in 2001.

Later in life, he found companionship again and married Marilyn (Baggs) Vig in 2009 in Shalimar, Florida.

He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn; daughter Diana (David) Johnson; grandchildren Andrea Hoeffling and Robert (Amanda) Johnson; and great-grandchildren Hudson, Hailey, Kensley, and Macy.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Gary (Claire Janty) Vig, Dale Vig, and Joan (Phil) Oswald, as well as many nieces and nephews.

His Final Farewell Will Take Place On June 4

Funeral services for Robert Eugene Davis will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Cumberland, with Rev. Timothy Schmidt officiating.

Visitation will take place from 9:00–11:00 AM at the church.

Bob will be laid to rest at Lakeside Cemetery, a peaceful resting place in the town he served so faithfully.

As another student poignantly shared,

“He had a positive impact on so many students that passed through his classroom. RIP Mr. D.”

Robert Eugene Davis may have passed on, but his ripple effect will live on in the hearts of his students, family, and the Cumberland community for generations to come.
