Wanda Vaughan Wilburn, 91, a former high school athlete and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, in Sherman, Texas.

A Life Rooted In Texas

Born on April 19, 1934, in Centerville, Texas, Wanda grew up with a passion for athletics and was known for her competitive spirit throughout her school years.

Her early love for sports shaped her driven and energetic personality that remained constant throughout her life.

After graduating, Wanda’s journey took her from Houston to Los Angeles, and eventually to Dallas, where she and her husband, Alton Jarvis Wilburn, established a successful custom-home building business.

The couple played a vital role in shaping North Dallas during its period of rapid growth, helping to develop neighborhoods that would become home to countless families.

When not immersed in her business ventures, Wanda found joy in sewing, exploring new destinations, and spending time by the water, whether boating, fishing, or simply soaking in the serenity.

Family And Community

Wanda leaves behind a devoted family, including her daughters: Cassie Steffen, Melinda Roewe, and Vanessa Wilburn.

She is also survived by her cherished sister, Lela Gindratt, and her beloved grandson, Ronan Roewe.

In addition, she is remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, and cousins whose lives she touched deeply.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alton Jarvis Wilburn, who passed away in 2026.

In true Wanda fashion, the family has asked that no flowers be sent.

Instead, they encourage everyone to honor Wanda’s memory by donating to their favorite charity, a gesture that reflects her generous and compassionate nature.

A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery on Thursday, August 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
