Jesse Walker Was A Legendary High School Basketball Coach!

served as head coach of the Lufkin High School boys basketball program for many years.

Most notably, he led the Panthers to the UIL state championship title in 1979.

The team secured a thrilling 75‑74 victory over Fort Worth Dunbar in the final after defeating Houston Madison 62‑55 in the semifinals.

Over his career, he earned 506 victories and coached at several schools, including Athens, Sweetwater, Van Horn, and Zavalla.

He was honored with a spot in the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

More than just a coach, Walker was seen as a father figure and mentor by many of his players.

He taught them important life lessons and stayed connected with them long after they graduated.

Before his coaching career, he played basketball at Huntington High School and later continued his athletic and academic path at Lon Morris College.

His time at Lon Morris was especially meaningful, not just for the basketball, but for the relationships.

Fellow coach Guy Davis recalled how they would travel together to watch games and scout talent, showing Walker’s early dedication to the sport and to building community through it.

Even after he retired from coaching, he stayed close to the game and continued to support his former players.

Jesse Walker cared deeply about his family and encouraged others to do the same.

His daughter went to school with one of his players, showing how closely his personal and coaching lives were connected.

His impact went far beyond basketball; he left behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and community.

Coach Walker’s passing has left a void in the heart of his family and the whole community.

One of his former students, Ronnie Blake, remembered how Walker made the team feel like family, saying:

He taught me how to be a winner. He taught me how to love what I do. He taught me how to treat my teammates like family

Likewise, another student, Joel Davis, shared that after losing his father in high school, Coach Walker stepped in as a guiding figure. He further said:

Coach Walker stepped in and became that father figure. He helped me choose Angelina College. He was always there for me.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Coach Jesse Walker’s family, friends, and well-wishers.

Rest In Peace, Legend!
