Joye Lee-McNelis was a titan in women’s basketball, both as a player and a coach. Born in Leetown, Mississippi, she arrived at Southern Miss in 1980 as a standout guard from Hancock North Central High School.
As a player, she helped lead the Lady Eagles to their first-ever postseason appearance in 1981 and finished her career as the program’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,512 points.
Her jersey number 14 was retired by her high school. Joye Lee-McNelis was inducted into the Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Southern Miss Legends Club in 2026.
The former basketball player kicked off her coaching career in 1984 as an assistant at Texas State, followed by a stint at Southern Miss from 1986 to 1991.

In 1991, at just 28 years old, Joye Lee-McNelis became head coach at Memphis. She for 13 seasons, compiling a 229-156 record.
She led the Tigers to four NCAA Tournament appearances, four consecutive conference championships, and a notable upset over USC in the 1994–95 NCAA East Regional.
Thanks to her success at Memphis, which earned her a finalist spot for National Coach of the Year in 1995.
Later in 2004, Lee-McNelis returned to her alma mater, Southern Miss. During her tenure, she coached for 21 seasons, achieving a 339-308 record.
