The nation is mourning the loss of Tim Strachan, a former University of Maryland football analyst, celebrated motivational speaker, and attorney, who passed away at age 49 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Tim Strachan was a former football star at DeMatha Catholic High School; his future changed forever after a devastating spinal cord injury at the age of 17.
But the setback became a launching pad for a life filled with purpose, leadership, and service to others.
Tim Strachan’s Dream Of QB Was Shattered By An Accident
Growing up as the youngest of four brothers, Tim Strachan quickly established himself as a standout athlete.
By his junior year at DeMatha, he had already led the team to back-to-back WCAC Championships and was recognized as one of the Top 5 quarterbacks in the country, alongside the likes of Peyton Manning.
But in August 1993, just before his senior year, tragedy struck.
While playing volleyball at Bethany Beach, Strachan dove into a wave and suffered a C-5 vertebrae fracture that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down when he was only 17.
Despite this life-altering injury, Tim Strachan’s spirit never wavered.
Although he could no longer play, Strachan remained deeply connected to the game of football.
Coach Mark Duffner at the University of Maryland honored his scholarship, and Strachan served as a student assistant coach from 1996 to 1999.
Tim Strachan Found His Success As A Football Analyst
It was during this time that he became a sideline analyst for Maryland football broadcasts, forming an iconic 22-year partnership with veteran announcer Johnny Holliday.
Holliday wrote in tribute,
“He taught me so much, especially how to stay positive and focused. He did more in his 49 years than I have done in my lifetime. I loved him like a brother.”
Via FacebookWith the mentorship of Dr. Leah Waks, he honed his skills in public speaking and communication, eventually becoming the student keynote speaker at his graduation.
After earning his degree in communication in 1999, Strachan graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004.
He went on to serve as Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee and later as Attorney Advisor in the Office of Legislative Affairs at the FCC.
Despite his busy legal career, Strachan remained active as a motivational speaker, delivering powerful speeches to schools, businesses, and sports teams.
In 1999, Washingtonian Magazine named him Washingtonian of the Year for his inspiring work and dedication to public service.
Tim Strachan Was A Family Man
Tim’s personal life was just as fulfilling.
In a beautiful twist of fate, he reconnected with Leslie, the girl he once “went steady with” in the second grade.
The two married in 2005 and went on to raise two daughters, Sophie and Olivia.
Friends describe Tim as someone who lived with joy and intention.
A friend wrote,
“You fought one hell of a battle and now you’ve won your freedom from pain. Enjoy your new legs, Buddy. Cancer sucks.”
