Former York Golf Club Member Russ Hill’s Death Marks the Passing of a Beloved Music Educator and Community Leader

Russ Hill, age 95, of Worthington, passed away on August 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of music, education, and community service.

A longtime resident of Worthington since 1944, Russ dedicated his life to fostering music and mentorship in central Ohio.

A graduate of Worthington High School and The Ohio State University, Russ taught instrumental music in Chillicothe and the Worthington City School District.

He performed professionally as a trumpet player in numerous central Ohio ensembles and remained deeply involved with the OSU Alumni Band, helping organize the first Alumni Band reunion.

He also as past president of the active Alumni Band, the Script Ohio Club, and TBDBITL, and was an active member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity.

Russ’s commitment extended beyond music. He partnered with Coyle Music Center for 35 years, building a thriving business alongside dedicated associates.

He actively participated in music industry associations, including NAMM and NASMD, and proudly supported all the employees who contributed to the center’s success.

A veteran of the Korean War, Russ belonged to the University Masonic Lodge and the Aladdin Shrine Band, enjoying numerous trips and camaraderie with fellow Shriners.

He also loved golf and cherished his time with friends at York Golf Club.

Russ was preceded in death by his wife, Jane (Hutson) Hill, his parents, Robert D. and Dorothy Hill, and his brother, Robert S. Hill.

He is survived by his daughters Debbie (Terry) Tyler and Laura (Dwight) Drake, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a private celebration at Union Cemetery. They extend their gratitude to the staff at Willow Brook Christian Home Assisted Living for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Willow Brook Christian Home Assisted Living in Delaware, Ohio.
