The Hilton Head Island High School community is mourning the loss of longtime athletic director and former lacrosse coach Joe Monmonier, who left a lasting imprint on thousands of student-athletes and educators across South Carolina.
Monmonier passed away this week after serving more than 20 years at Hilton Head High, including the last 13 as athletic director.
In that time, he became more than just a leader in athletics; he became a beloved mentor, a trusted colleague, and a central figure in the Seahawk family.
The school shared in a statement,
“Joe was more than an athletic director, he was a true champion for our Seahawk community. His commitment to excellence and athletics left a legacy that has helped shape the spirit of our Seahawk family.”
Joe Monmonier Dedicated His Life To Youth And Service
Joe Monmonier began his career at Hilton Head as a special education teacher and lacrosse coach, eventually becoming a guiding force in the school’s athletic department.
His influence extended well beyond Hilton Head, mentoring fellow athletic directors across the state and gaining widespread respect for his integrity, empathy, and vision.

Support services for grieving students and staff will be available at the school beginning Monday, July 14.
The school has also promised to share upcoming memorial service details with the public.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Kim, and daughters Ava and Caroline, who were the center of his world.
One friend wrote:
“Great friend and colleague. Left us way too early. Impacted many an athlete, AD, and community. He will be missed but not forgotten. Prayers for Kim and girls.”
Another added:
“God Bless Joe. Kim and the Girls are in our prayers.”
Joe Monmonier And His Wife Adopted Their Second Daughter From Kazakhstan
Joe’s dedication extended far beyond school grounds.
In 2010, the Monmonier family experienced a life-changing moment when they welcomed their second daughter, Caroline, home from Kazakhstan.

That December, Joe undertook a 30-hour journey across continents to bring home the 9-month-old baby girl they had adopted after spending over a year navigating international paperwork and travel restrictions.
Kim shared in a family blog at the time, revealing she had been adopted and wanted to give another child the same second chance at life and love.
She said,
“I always felt like adoption was something I was meant to do.”

The couple had connected with the Children at Heart adoption agency and spent 37 days in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan bonding with Caroline, who had been placed in an orphanage just six days after birth.
After a brief return home, Joe alone made the final journey to bring Caroline back.
He traveled solo from Kazakhstan to Germany, then on to Chicago and finally Savannah, all with an infant in tow.

Once home, Caroline immediately bonded with her new family, including her older sister Ava.
Rest in peace, Coach Monmonier. Your legacy lives on in every life you touched.
