The HD Class of 1973 and the wider community are mourning the death of Coach Charles Walker, who passed away peacefully in his sleep.

His former players, colleagues, and friends remember him not only as an exceptional coach and teacher but also as a mentor who touched countless lives with his wisdom, patience, and kindness.

Marcie McCann Alford, a member of the HD Class of ’73, shared the news with a heartfelt tribute.

She that Coach Walker is likely “doing a serious survey in Heaven” and reminded everyone that his celebration of life will be held in the high school gym—a fitting place to honor a man who dedicated his life to the game and his students.

David W. Cain, one of his former players, recalled the impact Coach Walker had on his life both on and off the court.

Cain shared how Walker supported his family and guided him through personal struggles with patience and compassion.

Coach Walker never judged me; he treated me the same as he would anyone else,” Cain .

He remembered how Walker encouraged him during a difficult time, allowing him the space he needed when dealing with family challenges.

Coach Walker will always be remembered. RIP,” Cain concluded.

Other tributes poured in from across the community. Loyde McIllwain described him as a “great coach and teacher,” while Larry Stephens called him a “super awesome coach and man.”

Jackie Johnson reflected on the sadness of the loss, adding that “he was loved and respected by many.

Many remembered him not only for his role as a coach but also as a mentor who shaped their lives beyond sports.

Joe Musselwhite recalled how Walker gave him advice when he considered leaving school to work on oil rigs.

He said, ‘Listen to me when I say you don’t want to do that,’ but I was hardheaded,” Musselwhite admitted, acknowledging that Walker always tried to guide him in the right direction.

Douglas Moore called him “a great friend,” while Mike Bivens expressed love and respect for him as both a teacher and mentor. Kim Davis Roberts added,

“Great coach, teacher, and mentor. He meant a lot to so many people.”

Coach Charles Walker’s influence extended far beyond the gym. He embodied dedication, compassion, and fairness, leaving a lasting mark on generations of students and athletes.

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy lives on in the values and lessons he instilled in others.

The community will gather soon to celebrate his life, sharing memories and honoring a man who gave so much of himself to those around him.
