Following his retirement in 2009, Shanahan transitioned into executive roles, first serving as the NHL’s senior vice president and director of player safety before joining the Toronto Maple Leafs as president and alternate governor in 2014.

His leadership of the franchise’s rebuilding efforts, dubbed the “Shanaplan,” transformed Toronto into a competitive force, though playoff success remained elusive until recently.
