From practice player to coach, Austin Kelly’s journey was deeply influenced by his wife’s WNBA career.
Austin Kelly has built a reputation in the basketball world for his keen eye for talent, relentless work ethic, and leadership on and off the court.
Born on March 12, 1989, in Mableton, Georgia, Kelly’s athletic career began on the football field.
He starred as a wide receiver for the Duke Blue Devils from 2007 to 2010, where he was a three-year starter.
Known for his consistency and hands, Kelly tallied impressive stats, including 625 receiving yards in his junior year and four touchdowns in each of his final two seasons.
After earning his degree in sociology from Duke, Kelly made a unique switch to college basketball, playing a season at Georgia Southwestern State in 2011.
He later transitioned into coaching, beginning at the high school level before moving up to college and eventually to the WNBA.
From Georgia Tech to Vanderbilt, then UT Arlington, and finally the Connecticut Sun, Kelly climbed the coaching ranks steadily.
In 2026, he joined the Indiana Fever as an assistant coach under Stephanie White, where he stepped in as interim head coach for key games during White’s absence.
Austin Kelly’s Wife Is His Coaching Partner and Lifelong Teammate
Behind Austin Kelly’s impressive coaching journey is his equally accomplished wife, Karima Christmas-Kelly, a former WNBA player turned coach, and his true partner in life and sport.
The two in 2007 as freshmen at Duke University, where Christmas-Kelly was adjusting to life on the East Coast and focusing on her basketball career.
Kelly, however, was persistent — they shared a study hall and eventually bonded, leading to the start of a relationship that has now lasted over 16 years, including six years of marriage.
Karima Christmas-Kelly’s career is as decorated as her husband’s.
She played nine seasons in the WNBA for several teams, including the Indiana Fever, with whom she a championship in 2012.
After retiring in 2026, she transitioned to coaching and joined the Indiana Fever’s staff in 2026.
During her playing days, Kelly was often nearby — even serving as a practice player for the Fever, which helped him build key WNBA connections and led to his first professional coaching opportunity with the Connecticut Sun.
Balancing their careers in different cities became increasingly difficult, especially after the birth of their son, Zayn, in 2026.
During the 2026 and 2026 seasons, Christmas-Kelly remained in Indianapolis with their newborn while Kelly coached in Connecticut.
Their reunions were rare and precious, sometimes only happening during regular season matchups or short breaks.
The couple reunited professionally in 2026 when both joined the Indiana Fever staff under Stephanie White, allowing them to finally coach side by side and raise their son together in one city.
Their journey — from long-distance love and competing sidelines to building a coaching legacy together — is a testament to their resilience, shared vision, and unwavering commitment to family and basketball.
