John Franklin ‘Frank’ Nixon, age 87, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, North Carolina.
A respected community figure from Gastonia, North Carolina, he was an avid sports fan and former athlete.
John Franklin Played Baseball And Football During His Early Years!
Born on October 13, 1937, in Gaston County, Franklin “Frank” Nixon, to late Charles Ossie Nixon Sr. and Margaret Rigler Nixon, was a dedicated athlete, textile professional, and community leader.
He went to Cramerton High School and NC State University, where he earned a degree in textiles.
Likewise, he was recognized for his athleticism during his time at Cramerton High School, where he likely participated in school sports.
During his younger years, he enjoyed playing golf and was actively involved in basketball, football, and baseball.
Frank first became known for his athletic abilities, earning respect for his competitive spirit and teamwork.
He later spent over 40 years working in the textile industry, including at Burlington Industries (21 years) and Pharr Yarns (22 years), where he held management positions.
After retiring, he stayed active in his community as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Cramerton.
He also helped lead local organizations, such as the Gardner Acres Swim Club and the Kiwanis Club, in 1973.
His passing has left a void in the heart of his family and the community. His loss is felt strongly in Cramerton and by everyone who knew him.
People remember him as the town’s “unofficial mayor” and someone who always made time for others.
One of his friends, , paid tribute by recalling their final moment with John, saying:
I can’t believe this , last time I spoke with Frank on the 8th , he said he was on oxygen now and trying to get used to it .
Frank was my friend since 1982 when I came to Pharr . He was my golfing buddy and partner . My confidante, I could vent to and he’d vent to me in return . I could go on and on but just know that he loved all his family and spoke of them a lot . He missed Joyce tremendously
He is survived by his children, Leslie Nixon Farrar, Julia Nixon Leinthall, and Todd Franklin Nixon, grandchildren, Caleb and Joshua Farrar, and Noah Nixon, as well as his great-grandchildren.
Moreover, , Joyce Lee Nixon, his parents, and his brother, Charles Ossie Nixon Jr.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of Cramerton.
Memorial contributions can be made to the church’s Restoration Fund in his honor.
