Bill and his wife, Marol Dellinger, met in the early 1970s and were close companions for over four decades.
Dellinger was a revered American middle-distance runner and legendary coach whose influence shaped generations of athletes.
Born on March 23, 1934, in Grants Pass, Oregon, he competed in three Olympic Games (1956, 1960, and 1964) and earned a bronze medal in the 5000 meters at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
After retiring from competition, he coached at the University of Oregon under the guidance of Bill Bowerman.
He later served as the head coach from 1973 to 1998, mentoring athletes like Steve Prefontaine and Mary Decker.
Tragically, Dellinger passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, at the age of 91, leaving behind a towering legacy in the world of track and field.
Bill Dellinger And His Wife, Marol, Were Best Friends For Years!
Marol Dellinger, born Marilyn Ann Alpaugh on March 29, 1935, in Williston, North Dakota, was one of four daughters.
In 1941, her family moved to the Pacific Northwest, eventually settling in St. Helens, Oregon, where she graduated from high school as prom queen in 1953.
Marol later moved to the Eugene/Springfield area in 1955 and worked as a licensed massage therapist and gym instructor.
She also spent 12 years working at the Veterans Memorial Building, affectionately known as the Vet’s Club.
Before meeting Bill Dellinger, Marol was married to Jack W. Bucknum (who preceded her in death), with whom she had three children: Mary Lou Breckel, David Wright Bucknum Sr., and Daniel Wright Bucknum.
She met Bill in 1972 at the Vet’s Club, and their friendship blossomed into a deep, enduring love.
They married on July 25, 1987, and remained together until her passing on June 22, 2014, at the age of 79, due to .
When she married Bill, she also became stepmother to his three sons: Dave, Dan, and Joe Dellinger.
Marol loved playing golf and was a member of the Springfield Country Club.
She and Bill were devoted New York Yankees fans; they watched nearly every game on TV and even went to a few in person.
In the years following Marol’s death, Bill relied on the support of his family, including his sons and grandchildren, as well as the extended Oregon track community.
After more than a decade apart, Bill Dellinger has now reunited with his beloved wife, Marol.
The news of Dellinger’s passing has stirred heartfelt tributes from across the globe.
Former athletes, colleagues, and fans have expressed profound sorrow, remembering him not only as a brilliant coach but as a compassionate mentor and friend.
Rudy Chapa, one of his former athletes, said,

The Eugene-Springfield community, where he spent most of his life, is mourning the loss of a local hero whose impact extended far beyond the track.
