Carroll High School’s football program is undergoing yet another leadership change as head coach Marvin Williams was unexpectedly relieved of his duties on Monday.
The move marks the fifth coaching change for the Bulldogs since 2026, and comes with fewer than 40 days remaining until the school’s 2026 football jamboree.
Williams, who had just dropped the interim tag last February to take the head coaching job at his alma mater, said he was caught off guard by the decision.
He met with newly appointed Principal Cassandra Shelling, expecting to discuss his 12-month plan, but instead left the meeting without a job.
Williams explained,
“She started talking about how I don’t have enough numbers, and that I used profanity a few times and she heard it. She said she doesn’t think that’s appropriate, and that’s pretty much the reason for my head getting butchered.”
According to Williams, the team currently has around 45 players on the roster, a number that may not have met administrative expectations.
Calls to Carroll High School administration were not returned Monday afternoon, leaving the full context of the decision unclear.
Marvin Williams Was Promoted To Head Coach In 2026
Marvin Williams, a 1994 Carroll graduate, was promoted to full-time head coach after stepping in as interim following the resignation of Garry Hines in July 2026.
Under Williams, the Bulldogs finished with a 5-4 record last season, showing signs of progress amid a tumultuous period for the team.
Since 2026, the football program has seen five different head coaches, and with Williams’ departure, the school is now searching for its sixth head coach in just three years.
Despite the abrupt end to his tenure, Williams expressed a desire to stay connected with the team and support the players.
He said,
“I hate it. It’s like losing your kids. If I got the opportunity, I would love to stick around and stay with the kids and support whoever gets it. I’ll support them and wish them the best. I’m a Bulldog, and I want them to represent.”
Williams’ wife, Makeesha Bell Williams, voiced her support for her husband in a heartfelt message shared publicly:
“I love my husband! He chose to be positive in his interview instead of giving details that would make certain people look bad! Great job, Marvin Williams. At the end of the day, no one can say that you didn’t have a positive impact on the boys. The truth will eventually come out. ❤️”
Via FacebookAs the Bulldogs scramble to find a new coach before the season kicks off, many in the Carroll community are left wondering if stability will ever return to a once-proud football tradition.
