The Benedictine University community is mourning the tragic loss of Kevin Bushnell, 23, a standout student-athlete and 2026 graduate, who passed away on Friday, June 20, following a courageous 10-month battle with cancer.
Bushnell, a native of Tinley Park, Illinois, leaves behind an unforgettable legacy both on and off the baseball field.
Known for his powerful bat, tireless work ethic, and quiet leadership, Bushnell became one of the most decorated players in Benedictine baseball history.
Kevin Bushnell Left A Legacy Written In Records
Over his four-year career, Bushnell started all 172 games he played, setting a school record, and proved to be a cornerstone of the program.
He earned All-American honors twice, was named All-Conference four times, and was a two-time All-Region selection.
In 2026, Bushnell delivered a career-defining season, batting .433 with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs, leading Benedictine to its first-ever NACC Championship and first NCAA Regional appearance in over a decade.
His 2026 campaign also saw him set a single-season school record for hits with 81.
By the end of his collegiate career, Bushnell was Benedictine’s all-time leader in home runs (49), runs scored, and RBIs, and ranked in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category.
Kevin Bushnell Was More Than an Athlete
Bushnell majored in Social Science, and though known best for his achievements in athletics, he was equally respected for his character.
Described by those who knew him as humble, hardworking, and kind-hearted, Bushnell had a quiet strength that inspired teammates and coaches alike.
Kevin once said in an interview,
“Something people don’t know is that I’m always willing to help people if I know they are willing to work hard.”
Following his graduation in 2026, Bushnell joined the Millikin University baseball coaching staff, where he worked with hitters and infielders.
Though his time in coaching was short, he made an immediate impression as a mentor to younger players, just as he had with teammates during his playing days.
The President of Benedictine University released a heartfelt statement:
“Kevin embodied the spirit of Benedictine through his resilience, dedication, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him. His presence enriched our community in many ways. We trust that Kevin is now at peace in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father. On behalf of the entire Benedictine University community, I extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Kevin’s family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Friends and loved ones are welcome to pay their respects during visitation on Tuesday, June 24, 2026, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lawn Funeral Home in Tinley Park.
A funeral service will be held the following day, Wednesday, June 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church.
