The Montevideo community is grappling with the devastating loss of 19-year-old Hallie Helgeson, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident early Sunday morning, July 20.
Hallie, a recent graduate of Montevideo Senior High School and a cherished daughter, granddaughter, and friend, died in a collision on Interstate 39 in Wisconsin. The accident also left several others injured.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after midnight when a wrong-way SUV, allegedly driven by an impaired driver, struck another vehicle.
Hallie was riding as a passenger in the compact SUV that was hit. Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.
Hallie’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through Montevideo and beyond.

Hallie’s plans for the future reflected her compassionate nature. She intended to begin classes this fall at Lake Area Technical College, pursuing a career in occupational therapy.
Her desire to help others was not limited to her career goals—it was evident in every aspect of her life.
Those who knew Hallie describe her as someone who brought people together. She was a steady, kind presence who listened with her whole heart and gave freely of herself.
