Coach Thomas “TJ” Wells, a longtime volunteer track coach at Morehouse College, has passed away at the age of 74.

While the exact cause of Coach Thomas “TJ” Wells’ passing has not been publicly announced, a that he succumbed to “C” after a long and courageous battle.

His friend recalled a moment from more than a year ago when TJ, during his treatment, spoke with quiet determination:

…the doctors are…sending…me…home…to die.

Well has now reunited with his beloved wife, , who passed away on April 9, 2016, and their son, Jeffrey Joseph Wells, who left this world in 2006 before his mother.

Thomas ‘TJ’ Wells Dedicated Nearly Four Decades To Morehouse College Athletics!

was a beloved and proud alumnus of Morehouse College.

He dedicated nearly four decades to the track and field and cross-country programs, shaping them as a student-athlete and coach.

A member of the Class of 1974, he was a two-sport student-athlete, competing in football and track before transitioning into coaching in 1987.

Under his leadership, Morehouse secured 38 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championships.

One of the most notable victories was the inaugural SIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship title in February 2026.

His mentorship helped produce numerous All-SIAC athletes, NCAA national qualifiers, and student leaders who uphold the college’s mission.

Beyond athletics, Wells served as a Center Director at the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation from 1973 to 1998 and volunteered with Scouting America.

His dedication to education, sports, and community upliftment made him a cornerstone of Morehouse athletics.

Regarding his retirement, Wells never officially retired; he remained actively involved in coaching until his passing.

Sadly, Coach Wells passed away in July 2026, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and mentorship.

Morehouse College and the broader Atlanta community are mourning his loss.

His loved ones are sharing heartfelt tributes, remembering his dedication to student-athletes and his impact on generations of track & field competitors.

One of his close friends paid tribute, highlighting his influence extended beyond athletic, saying:

Over the years, Scouting brings people into your life who become lifelong friends. Today, I’m saddened to share that my dear friend, Thomas Jefferson “TJ” Wells, has passed on.TJ was a true Scouter through and through. My dad and TJ served together on Wood Badge staff in the 1980s, and ever since, he remained a constant and familiar presence in the Scouting community. We’d often cross paths at events, sharing stories and memories that always brought a smile.

Many of his former athletes and colleagues have expressed their grief, highlighting his mentorship, discipline, and encouragement that shaped their careers.

Morehouse College is expected to hold a memorial service to honor his legacy, allowing the community to come together in remembrance.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Thomas “TJ” Wells’ family, friends, and well-wishers.
