Gerald “Jerry” Swan, a revered coach, educator, and mentor who shaped generations of young athletes in Wisconsin, has passed away at age 92.
The longtime Mukwonago High School coach and three-sport athlete left behind an enduring legacy of discipline, sportsmanship, and heartfelt leadership.
Swan died peacefully on July 4, 2026, with his beloved wife Jeannine by his side, just days after the couple celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Jerry Swan Devoted His Life To The Game And His Community
Born on June 20, 1933, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Jerry Swan’s lifelong journey with sports began early.
He earned 11 varsity letters at Mukwonago High School, where he graduated in 1951 as captain of the boys’ basketball team.
He later played collegiate sports and earned a degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, followed by a Master’s from UW-Madison.
Swan returned to his hometown and took over a struggling basketball program at Mukwonago in 1961.
Over the next 24 years, he transformed it into a respected powerhouse, guiding the Indians to 3 conference championships (1965, 1975, 1978), 5 regional titles, and 8 consecutive winning seasons.
Likewise, Coach Swan’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. He was named Southern Lakes Conference Coach of the Year three times and was awarded All-Freeman Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
He was also inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998 and honored by the Mukwonago Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
Beyond wins and accolades, Swan was celebrated for his impact on young athletes and the coaching community.
He served as Dean of Waukesha County Basketball Coaches, wrote for national coaching journals like Scholastic Coach, and continued coaching at Park View Middle School after his 1985 retirement from varsity basketball.
Jerry Swan Is Mourned By Many
In a statement, Ken Barrett, interim executive director of the WBCA, said:
“Coach Swan was a true hall of famer who devoted his life to kids and the game of basketball. A donation will be made from the WBCA to Vernon Lutheran Church in his honor.”
While basketball was his passion, Swan’s life was richly whole.
He was a devoted member and lay leader at Vernon Lutheran Church, where he often led team prayers before games, prayers he wrote himself.
Coach Jerry Swan Has Passed Away (Source: Facebook)In his younger years, he played saxophone in a local five-member band, and in retirement, he found joy in golf, fishing, and spending time with his growing family.
He is survived by his wife Jeannine (Schmaltz), sons Scott (Debbie), Mark (Lisa), and Jeff (Mary), nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren (with one more on the way).
Visitation for Coach Swan will be held on Friday, July 11, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a noon service at Vernon Lutheran Church.
Instead of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Jerry’s memory to Vernon Lutheran Church, an institution founded by his ancestors.
