Community Mourns the Untimely Passing of New York Softball Star Javier ‘Zurdo’ Matos

Javier ‘Zurdo’ Matos, a New York native and exceptional athlete managing the softball team Escogido, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, leaving his family and loved ones devastated.

While the details regarding the untimely death of Javier Matos are not yet available, many of his loved ones are recalling his memories and extending their condolences to his family.

Javier Matos was known for his athletic skills and won the heart of many with his cheerful and kind nature.

He showcased his outstanding softball skills managing Escogido, an 11-time champion softball team in the NYC EMC Softball League, leading his team to several victories.

Likewise, prior to Escogido, Javier Matos, known as Zurdo, played softball in the Van Sickle league of the week and the Dominican League for several years.

In addition to being an exceptional softball player and manager, Javier Matos also served as an umpire and leader and was a great friend to many.

The untimely death of Javier Matos has left a profound void in the lives of his friends, family, and loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, children, mother, and the entire family and friends.

Social Media Flooded With Tributes to Late Softball Star Javier Matos

Many of Javier Matos’ friends and loved ones are expressing their sorrow and paying tribute to him on social media.

Springfield Otsl also took to their official Facebook page to recall the memories of the late Javier Matos and appreciate his contributions to the sports community.

The post reads:

“Our league joins the grief that the family of a great human being Javier Matos better known as ‘Zurdo’ It’s a shame this great loss of a human being; humble and respectful of the game.”

Similarly, his friend shared a heartfelt post on social media stating:

“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our brother, friend, and teammate, El Zurdo. An exceptional human being, full of life, passion for sports, and a spirit of service that left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him.
I was fortunate to see him grow alongside his lifelong brother, Felipe López. Always together, inseparable.”

He further added:

“El Zurdo leaves an unforgettable legacy and a responsibility for all of us: to honor his memory with the passion and dedication he always showed.May his soul rest in peace, and may the Father receive him in His Glory.The sports family will never forget you, brother.Rest in peace, El Zurdo.”

Likewise, his friend Felipe Lopez has organized a to help Javier Matos’ family cover the expenses during this difficult time.

The fundraiser’s goal is to raise $6k, and to date, around $3,919 has been raised, which is 65 percent of the total goal.
