Paralympian Iona Winnifrith Overcame Skeletal Dysplasia, Earning National And International Recognition!

She is well on her way to becoming one of Britain’s top para-swimming champions.

Despite having skeletal dysplasia, Iona Winnifrith started swimming lessons as a toddler and later competed at a high level, proving that determination and passion can overcome any challenge.

Iona Winnifrith is a British para-swimmer who made history at the 2026 Paris Paralympics by winning a silver medal in the women’s SB7 100m breaststroke.

At just 13 years old, she became ParalympicsGB’s youngest swimming medallist this century.

Competing in her second final at her debut Games, she set a new British record but was narrowly beaten by a world-record performance from Mariia Pavlova.

Iona Winnifrith Has Been Actively Involved In Sports Since A Young Age!

Iona Winnifrith has a form of skeletal dysplasia, which causes short stature due to shortened limbs.

From the time she was six months old, Iona’s parents took her to baby swimming groups, where she eagerly watched her three older brothers have lessons.

Luckily, Tonbridge Swimming Club (TSC), where her brother joined, had introduced a Learn to Swim program for children aged five and above.

Despite being younger than required, she was allowed to join, marking the beginning of her journey in competitive swimming.

She has makes her feel free and calm.

Iona Winnifrith is still in school, balancing her education with her swimming training schedule at Tonbridge Swimming Club.

Her swimming achievements are already impressive, including gold in the SB7 100m breaststroke and SM7 200m individual medley at the 2026 European Championships in Funchal.

Additionally, she secured bronze in the S7 50m butterfly at the same event and has claimed multiple British national titles in breaststroke and butterfly races.

Her coach, Michael Ellis, recognized her potential early on and believed she would reach a major senior championship by the LA 2028 Olympics. But she exceeded expectations by making her Paralympic debut in 2026.

Despite facing challenges due to skeletal dysplasia, Iona Winnifrith has never let her condition define her limits.

With her dedication, talent, and unwavering passion for swimming, Iona’s future looks incredibly bright.
