Greg King, a retired coach and teacher at Norwood High School, passed away, leaving behind his close-knit family.

He was an avid sports lover who had coached for over 46 years. He coached basketball and football.

After a legendary 46-year career in education, coaching, and athletic administration, Greg King was honored with induction into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

His journey began in 1976 in his hometown of Walsenburg, Colorado, before he went on to make an impact at six different schools. However, it was at Stratton High School where he solidified his legacy as one of Colorado’s greatest coaches.

During his eight-year tenure, King led the Stratton Eagles to five state football championships, while guiding the team to an incredible 48-game winning streak.

Moreover, his success wasn’t limited to football. He also coached the Stratton boys’ basketball team to two state titles, demonstrating his ability to develop championship programs across multiple sports.

Beyond coaching, King served as an athletic director at multiple schools, including Del Norte, Grand Junction, La Veta, Sargent, and Alamosa High School.

Greg’s key was preparation; he looked at a lot of film, and went scouting. He had practice plans that covered individual skills, team skills, and situations, so when we got in a game there were very little surprises if any.

Greg King’s Family Mourns The Tragic Loss

Greg King was a beloved coach, mentor, husband, father, and friend. He touched countless lives with his unwavering passion, integrity, and dedication to those around him.

His impact extended far beyond the field or court. He shaped character, instilled resilience, and left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Coach King was more than just a leader to his players. He was a source of inspiration.

His teams were always well-prepared, disciplined, and played with relentless heart, which was a reflection of his tenacity and courage.

He believed deeply in his athletes, not just as competitors but as individuals, and loved each of them to the deepest core.

His influence extended far beyond the sidelines, shaping athletic programs and mentoring countless student-athletes.

What an honor to be coached by this man🩷 He was one of the best coaches I’ve ever had in my whole life and more! He truly loved every single one of his players to the deepest core, we lost a legend 🙁

King’s legacy lives on in the countless student-athletes he mentored, the friendships he nurtured, and the family he cherished.

His wife, Jill Downie, shared her profound grief.

To say I am sad is an understatement. Greg loved coaching and his players. He coached and influenced hundreds of student-athletes. He loved his family and his friends. My life will never be the same. As I navigate these new waters I will hold tight to my memories and my love for this man. He was my heart, my everything.
I am overwhelmed by the number of phone calls, texts, messages, and posts. They all mean so much. Thank you!

Furthermore, King embodied integrity in every aspect of his life. He coached with purpose, loved fiercely, and lived with a contagious enthusiasm that lifted those around him.

His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will endure through the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared.

His Wife, Jill Downie, and their two children, Dora and Cameron King, as well as the extended family, survive him. A celebration of the coach’s life will be announced at a later date.

Rest In Peace, Greg King.
