Rob Pelinka, the president of basketball operations and general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, grew up in an athletic household where his father coached multiple sports.

His parents raised him to focus on the pillars of faith, academics, family, and sports.

On March 7, 2017, Rob Pelinka signed a five-year deal to be the general manager of the Lakers.

Later, he was promoted to Vice President of Basketball Operations while also maintaining his role as General Manager on January 10, 2026. He finished in 7th place for the 2026 Executive of the Year Award.

In February 2015, he was criticized for concluding the Luka Dončić–Anthony Davis trade. It was considered to be one of the greatest coups in NBA history.

Furthermore, LeBron James is using his leverage to put pressure on Rob, ensuring the team continues to make moves to remain competitive.

He has played more basketball with the Lakers and Rob Pelinka than most people would have thought.

Robert Todd Pelinka Jr., the son of Carol and Robert E. Pelinka, was born on December 23, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois.

His parents raised him in a religious, close-knit family alongside his sister, Sally Miller.

Robert E. Pelinka spent 32 years teaching technology, architecture, engineering, and computer-aided drafting at Lake Forest High School in Illinois.

Beyond the classroom, he was a respected coach, leading the varsity basketball and track teams while also assisting with the football team.

His commitment to education extended beyond his retirement in 1998.

He was an intense coach. He really worked with the kids, and when you’re working with the freshmen, it’s very important to leave them with a good feeling about football.

He earned multiple advanced degrees, including a doctorate in ministry, and later volunteered as a teacher for at-risk men at Wayside Cross Mission in Aurora.

Furthermore, Robert was an entrepreneur, running businesses in garage door installation and home construction. He also served as a chaplain and Bible instructor at DuPage County Jail.

Meanwhile, Carol Pelinka provided unwavering support as a mother and partner in their family’s journey.

They fostered an environment of discipline, faith, and perseverance, which shaped Rob’s success in sports and business.

Rob Pelinka’s Father Passed Away Due To Colon Cancer

Robert E. Pelinka passed away on April 22, 2017, at his home in Carol Stream, Illinois, after complications from colon cancer. He was 76 years old.

The Los Angeles general manager has spoken about the influence of his father’s work ethic and dedication.

Robert E. Pelinka, the son of Eddie and Marguerite Pelinka, was born on February 9, 1941, in Faribault, Minnesota.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Southern Minnesota in 1964, he began his teaching career at Elkton High School in Minnesota.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Patty Purdie. A private celebration of life was held at the Pelinka family home in Carol Stream.

Instead of flowers, memorial donations were directed to Northwestern Medicine Home Health & Hospice in Carol Stream or Wayside Cross Ministries in Aurora, Illinois.

Robert E. Pelinka’s legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched as an educator and mentor. He was a dedicated educator and coach.
