AJ Russell was selected 52nd overall by the Texas Rangers due to his elite fastball metrics, strong college performance, and high-upside potential despite recent injury recovery.
A.J. Russell, the full name Andrew James Russell, is a talented 21-year-old right-handed pitcher from Franklin, Tennessee.
Recently, he signed with the Texas Rangers after being selected 52nd overall in the 2026 MLB Draft.
A standout at Franklin High School, Russell posted a stellar 1.14 ERA and 94 strikeouts in his senior year before heading to the University of Tennessee.
There, he made an immediate impact but faced a setback in spring 2026 when he underwent Tommy John surgery.
After months of rehab, he returned in 2026 to make six starts, tallying 36 strikeouts over 25.1 innings.
Despite limited action, scouts remained high on his potential due to his strong command, strikeout ability, and poise on the mound.

By offering roughly $750 K above slot, the Rangers effectively matched compensation typical of early first-round selections.
This demonstrated how highly they regard his potential, fastball arsenal, and recovery progress from elbow surgery.
